Christmas is just around the corner and with comes bright colourful lights, presents, and of course Christmas trees. But even with the breeze of the holiday swift through us, there are still plenty of reasons why we need to have termite control ready on our speed dial. One would be for them to extinguish all the unnecessary “decorations” that live among our Christmas tree – like pests!
Your Christmas tree might be harbouring fleas, bugs and other sorts of undesirable inhabitants. And the best way to get rid of them is to call the best pest exterminator in town. But if you want to do the weeding out yourself, follow these tips on how to exterminate Christmas tree pests:
Inspect the Tree Thoroughly
They say prevention is better than the cure itself. This is especially true when it comes to Christmas tree pests because inspecting the tree thoroughly allows you to get rid of the insects well before you unwittingly take them home. No one wants to celebrate the holidays with bugs crawling around their Christmas tree, after all!
So before you set up your Christmas tree, do inspect it first to see if there are any signs of aphids, adelgids or other small insects. Start by checking the undersides of branches. Then look at the trunk; if there are small holes with sawdust trails that means there might be bark beetles in there. Another technique to inspect a Christmas tree efficiently is by shaking it vigorously to dislodge insects and spiders. Then proceed to inspect the branch for egg cases and prune out any you find. Also, if there are nests of birds or any entities do remove these because they will definitely be home to some mites. Another thing, you can take the tree in your garage first and let it stay there for a solid 24 hours to help the tree settle.
Never Use Aerosol Pesticides
Insects need humidity to survive. If you happen to have purchased a Christmas tree that unfortunately hoards some insects in them, don’t use aerosol pesticides. Let them die on their own instead! You should know that aerosol pesticides are flammable, and it could your Christmas tree (or your house for that matter) at risk of catching fire. So unless you want to watch your tree and home burn, then avoid spraying these pesticides no matter what.
Use Safer Means
There are other ways to get rid of pests in Christmas trees without resorting to aerosol pesticides, in any case. One is to vacuum them out of the tree. Another is to dust the tree using Diatomaceous Earth or spray it with Neem oil. These methods are highly effective.
Having a Christmas tree in your living room is an important part of Yuletide tradition. So don’t let unwanted bugs and pests ruin your holiday spirits. Certainly don’t let these bugs scare you into not enjoying a freshly-cut evergreen! In case you end up having a really bad infestation in your hands, don’t hesitate to call us immediately!
